In December 2025, a significant total of 835 Fijians traveled overseas for employment, as reported by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. This figure underlines the growing opportunities for Fijians seeking work abroad, reflecting a trend towards international job prospects.
The latest data reveals that most residents leaving Fiji during this period were engaging in short-term travel; however, employment was a predominant reason for those making long-term commitments. Specifically, 261 individuals departed for periods ranging from three to twelve months, while an additional 362 were away for one to five years, indicating a notable shift towards medium to long-term job opportunities rather than merely short-term employment contracts.
Interestingly, employment-related departures outnumbered those for educational purposes, which accounted for 314 exits in December, and were greater than long-term business travel. Overall, the month recorded a total of 25,969 resident departures, with the vast majority—24,584 people—traveling for less than three months predominantly for vacations or personal visits.
Data from Statistics Fiji also highlighted that emigration, defined as departures exceeding five years or for permanent relocation, included 147 individuals. This group represents another layer of the narrative surrounding Fijians seeking opportunities beyond their homeland, driven by employment and other factors.
This trend illustrates not only a vigorous interest in overseas employment but also the resilience of Fijians in pursuing their professional aspirations, fostering hope for continued growth and prosperity within the workforce on a global scale.
