Opposition Leader Calls for Clarity on Constitutional Amendments

Opposition Leader Demands Clarity on Controversial Constitutional Amendments

The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to provide clarity on the specific amendments proposed in the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025. This request follows a recent meeting where Seruiratu raised concerns about the government’s lack of transparency regarding the intended changes to the 2013 Constitution.

Seruiratu expressed his apprehension, stating, “My biggest concern is that we do not know what they intend to amend.” He highlighted that the ambiguity surrounding these amendments has created unease among citizens, emphasizing the importance of the government communicating its intentions clearly before proceeding with any constitutional changes. He warned, “We don’t want to regret down the line because we do not know what they simply want to amend.”

In his comments, Seruiratu also stressed the importance of adhering to the legal framework of the Constitution, underscoring that the government must lead by example. He assured the public that he is committed to holding the government accountable in his role as the Leader of the Opposition.

These concerns resonate with earlier remarks from other opposition figures, including Independent MP Alvick Maharaj, who pointed out the necessity of official communication from the Prime Minister to prevent speculation and mistrust about the proposed amendments.

The current political situation presents an opportunity for constructive dialogue between the government and the opposition. A collaborative approach to constitutional reform could address the diverse needs and aspirations of Fiji’s citizens. Should the discussions around these amendments be conducted with transparency and inclusivity, they may strengthen the democratic processes in Fiji, leading to a more stable and equitable future.

As both sides engage in these vital political discussions, there is optimism that they can work together to achieve meaningful constitutional reforms that prioritize all Fijians’ interests, fostering unity and cooperation within the nation.
