The Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has urged Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to clarify specific areas intended for amendment in the 2013 Constitution, following the government’s push to introduce the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2025. This appeal came after a recent meeting between the two leaders, where Seruiratu expressed his concerns about the lack of transparency surrounding the proposed changes.
During the discussions, Seruiratu noted, “My biggest concern is that we do not know what they intend to amend.” He emphasized that citizens are anxious about the implications of these changes and highlighted the necessity for the government to wait and communicate its intentions clearly before moving forward with constitutional amendments. “We don’t want to regret down the line because we do not know what they simply want to amend,” he stated.
Moreover, Seruiratu stressed the importance of the government acting within the legal framework established by the Constitution, stating that it is crucial for the government to lead by example. He reassured the public that as the Leader of the Opposition, he would fulfill his role in keeping the government accountable.
These sentiments mirror earlier comments from other opposition leaders who have raised similar concerns about the government’s vague discourse on constitutional amendments, signaling a need for increased cooperation. Independent MP Alvick Maharaj previously pointed out that without official communication from the Prime Minister regarding proposed changes, speculation and mistrust may arise.
The current political landscape presents an opportunity for constructive engagement between the government and opposition. This collaborative approach could lead to constitutional reforms that reflect the diverse aspirations of Fiji’s citizens. The dialogue around constitutional amendments, if approached with transparency and inclusivity, holds the potential to strengthen democratic processes in Fiji, paving the way for a more stable and equitable future for its people.
In light of these political discussions, there is hope that both sides can work together towards meaningful changes that prioritize the interests of all Fijians, fostering unity and cooperation within the nation.
