A recent operation carried out by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) Emergency Control Unit has led to the discovery and confiscation of a substantial amount of contraband at the Suva Remand Centre in Walu Bay. Conducted late last night, the search revealed various illicit items, including marijuana, methamphetamine, gas lighters, mobile phones, smoking paraphernalia, syringes, earphones, makeshift chargers, screwdrivers, USB devices, and wires. This incident underscores the ongoing issue of contraband smuggling within correctional facilities, a point highlighted by Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa.
Dr. Nakarawa pointed out the pressing issue of overcrowding at the facility, which currently houses over 400 inmates, far exceeding its designed capacity of 200. He emphasized the FCS’s steadfast commitment to combating contraband smuggling while also addressing the complications presented by overcrowded conditions.
The FCS has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding drug use and staff involvement in smuggling operations. In line with this policy, FCS personnel will continue to undergo random drug testing to maintain integrity within the system.
Further, the FCS has issued a strong warning to individuals against smuggling or attempting to throw contraband over prison walls, stating that those apprehended will face severe legal consequences. They have called for public cooperation to support the integrity of the correctional system and emphasized the importance of community vigilance in these persistent efforts.
Looking ahead, the FCS is committed to ensuring public safety and facilitating the rehabilitation of inmates. The emphasis on community involvement is pivotal in maintaining the integrity of correctional facilities. With ongoing public support, there is optimism for successful management of these challenges, ultimately creating a safer environment for everyone involved.
In essence, the Fiji Corrections Service is dedicated to fostering a rehabilitative and secure atmosphere, showcasing their resolve to address the problems of contraband smuggling and the effects of overcrowding while seeking collaborative efforts from the community.
