Recent evaluations of the Termite Control Assistance Programme (TCAP) have shown that only 5 percent of participants utilized their grants for home renovations. A striking 95 percent did not apply the financial aid for its intended purpose, as noted by Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran.

Kiran explained that this trend might indicate that many individuals are either waiting for the termite baiting process to complete or are not planning to use the funds for home repairs. She emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring by the government to ensure that the subsidy funds are being used effectively and that alternative financial assistance, such as loan facilities, is available for those in need.

To combat the termite issue, the government is enhancing its initiatives by making products available in the market, conducting nationwide baiting efforts for those with household incomes below $30,000, and raising awareness about termite control. Kiran expressed optimism that with a renewed focus on mitigation and prevention strategies, financial institutions might provide necessary products to aid those affected in rebuilding their homes.

Additionally, there has been a notable increase in applications for the TCAP subsidy, with the program aiding the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) in identifying households that have experienced termite infestations but had previously not reported them. The financial support from the subsidy appears to have encouraged more individuals to come forward about their pest issues.

The TCAP offers a $5,000 subsidy for households with a combined income under $30,000 and a $2,000 subsidy for those earning between $30,000 and $50,000. This assistance is crucial in tackling the persistent problem of termite infestations while providing support to vulnerable households.

Overall, this scenario highlights the importance of community engagement and government support in addressing pest control challenges. It also reflects hopeful steps forward as the government re-evaluates its approach and looks for better solutions to support affected households.
