At 30, Josaia faced a life-changing challenge when he lost his right arm due to severe injuries sustained during Cyclone Ana in 2021. Facing the prospect of amputation to save his life, he chose not to succumb to despair and has instead chosen to forge ahead with unwavering resolve.
As a father of six, balancing his children’s care between two households, he demonstrates incredible dedication. His farm in Toga, Rewa, supplies fresh fruits and vegetables for his family, but it is the harvesting and selling of freshwater mussels, or sili kai, that truly helps him provide for their needs. His routine begins early each morning, as he gathers mussels and then sells them at the Laqere market in Suva.
Josaia previously sold at the Nausori market but decided to shift his business to Laqere, where he quickly noticed an improvement in his sales. Passersby often stop to marvel at his work ethic, frequently inquiring how he manages with just one arm. His response is inspiring: “I do it because I must. If I can do this with one arm, what’s stopping you?”
