The Government of Fiji has recently secured an additional contribution of $5 million from New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to the Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund. This funding underscores the robust partnership between Fiji and New Zealand, particularly in the areas of climate resilience and sustainable development.

The financial support will play a crucial role in Fiji’s planned relocation program, which aims to assist communities facing severe climate risks, such as Nabavatu. This ensures that these communities can access essential resources necessary for safe and dignified relocations, especially when all adaptation options have been exhausted.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed his gratitude for the contribution and praised New Zealand for its ongoing leadership and collaboration with Pacific communities. “I thank the Government and people of New Zealand for their continued partnership with Fiji. This contribution reflects our shared commitment to Pacific resilience, climate leadership, and standing together in support of communities most affected by climate change,” Rabuka stated.

New Zealand has a long-standing relationship with Fiji in terms of climate action, being the first country to allocate dedicated financing to the CROC Trust Fund in 2020. This consistent support highlights New Zealand’s commitment to assisting vulnerable communities not only in Fiji but throughout the Pacific as well.

The Climate Relocation of Communities Trust Fund, established in 2019, aims to facilitate orderly, inclusive, and dignified relocation for those at risk from climate change. Fiji’s Planned Relocation Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures emphasize a community-centered approach, empowering affected populations in the decision-making process while being supported by governmental and developmental partners.

The Fijian government maintains that relocation is viewed as a last resort, with earnest efforts directed towards in-situ adaptations prior to considering relocation. When relocation is unavoidable, the CROC framework guarantees a coordinated multi-agency and multi-stakeholder approach, focusing on protecting livelihoods, culture, land rights, and social cohesion.

The Government of Fiji expresses sincere appreciation for New Zealand’s continued support and looks ahead to further enhancing this vital partnership to foster climate-resilient development for the citizens of Fiji. This collaborative effort represents hope and commitment in addressing the challenges posed by climate change, paving the way for safer futures for vulnerable communities.
