The Office of the Divisional Commissioner for the Northern region has announced that they are taking proactive measures to prepare for anticipated wet weather in the next 48 hours. Today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima held a meeting with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority, to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to assist communities that may be affected.
According to the FRA, roads across the island remain clear and accessible despite heavy rainfall overnight. Information from the Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a thorough weather forecast, which is helping various stakeholders adjust their readiness plans accordingly.
The Ministry of Education has been instructed to prepare schools as potential evacuation centers if necessary. Residents living in low-lying areas are encouraged to take precautionary measures by relocating to higher ground during daylight to reduce risks associated with potential flooding.
Authorities are advising the public to limit movement at night to ensure safety and decrease hazards for first responders. Anyone needing information about evacuation centers or assistance should reach out to local authorities or the police.
In addition, Rainima has encouraged farmers to move their livestock to safer areas and take steps to protect their livelihoods during this time.
“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed,” stated Rainima.
The Commissioner’s Office will keep a close watch on the evolving situation and provide timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and cooperate with emergency services.
This proactive approach, combined with community cooperation, highlights the resilience and preparedness of the Northern Division in the face of potential weather challenges. By heeding safety advisories and staying informed, residents can minimize risks and protect themselves and their property.
