Rural and elderly commuters reliant on public transport in Fiji are urging authorities to address their travel challenges. They are advocating for improved internet services, additional top-up outlets, operational redeem machines, and a cash payment option for those in vulnerable positions.

A recent survey conducted at the Suva bus stand revealed widespread frustration among commuters concerning ongoing issues with the eTransport card system, as the Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) has implemented a “No card – No ride” policy. This policy has exacerbated troubles linked to the use of the eTransport cards and has caused operational hiccups when boarding buses.

Commuters expressed their dissatisfaction over lengthy wait times, access restrictions, and technical problems that undermine the reliability of bus services during peak morning and afternoon hours. FBOA president Richard Jagdish Lal addressed these concerns, stating that the decision to enforce the no-card policy followed extensive discussions over the years.

“The e-Ticketing system for our public transport has been operational now for more than eight years,” Lal remarked. He noted that with over 520,000 new cards issued, it is vital for those who lack cards to take personal responsibility. He emphasized that public transport users and their parents must ensure that cards are obtained and maintained, akin to other cashless services.

Highlighting the transition towards a cashless society, Lal pointed out that only 859 complaints were recorded from over 701 million trip-taps, underscoring the necessity for passengers, including students, to manage their e-Ticketing cards proactively. He stressed that it is imperative for adult users and parents to ensure their cards are always topped up to avoid any travel disruptions.

As discussions around enhancing public transport services continue, it remains hopeful that these improvements can lead to a smoother commuting experience for all, particularly for those most affected by these changes.
