The e-Transport card system continues to face significant challenges, with network failures and malfunctioning redeem machines causing disruptions for commuters. Many users have reported that these technical issues often interfere with their travel plans, raising concerns about the reliability of the system.
Kaminieli Noke, a resident of Cautata in Bau, expressed frustration over frequent encounters with network and machine failures. “Issues with redeeming my card on the bus when the machine is not working lead to awkward situations. The driver told me to get off and find a place to redeem my card,” he shared, underlining the inconvenience faced by users.
Vanueli Senibauvoro from Vunidawa in Naitasiri echoed similar sentiments, noting that network-related problems also complicated the process of topping up his card. He recounted an incident where he topped up his card, but the balance did not display when he attempted to use it on the bus, further illustrating the system’s unreliability.
Members of the public are calling for improvements in network coverage and the maintenance of redeem machines to ensure smoother operations. Elisabeta Maopa from Lokia in Rewa suggested, “If the machines are not working or the network is slow, they should allow us to use cash, especially for those of us living far from town with poor network coverage.” Her statement highlights the struggles faced by commuters in areas with limited access to reliable technology.
Adding to the frustration, the Fiji Bus Operators Association recently announced a strict ‘No Card – No Ride’ policy, which took effect yesterday. This new policy eliminates cash payments entirely, requiring all passengers, including school children, to board buses only with a topped-up eTicketing card. The association justified this move as part of the transition to a cashless bus system after providing leeway to passengers during the system’s upgrade.
Despite the challenges posed by the current situation, there is hope that with systemic improvements and increased reliability of services, the e-Transport card system can ultimately lead to a more efficient and user-friendly public transport experience for all commuters.
