Former Flying Fijians first five-eighth Nicky Little recently visited the Fijian Drua’s base in Legalega, Nadi, where he received a warm welcome from the current squad and management. During his visit, he expressed admiration for the impressive facilities available to the Drua. Reflecting on his own playing days, he wished such resources had been available to him, highlighting the progress made in the rugby environment in Fiji.

Little had a heartfelt reunion with his former teammates Kele Leawere and Ifereimi Rawaqa, both crucial members of the legendary 2007 Rugby World Cup team, which famously defeated Wales 38-34. Emphasizing the importance of camaraderie, he noted, “This is amazing. I wish we had this when I was younger,” and remarked on the unity present within the current team, comparing it to the strong bonds formed during his time in the 1970s, when resources were limited.

Known for his exceptional kicking skills, Little shared valuable advice with the Drua fly-halves, emphasizing the effective transition of the ball from the forwards to the backs and the tactical use of kicking. He also stressed the fundamental need for solid defense, succinctly stating, “And on defense, tackle your man. That’s it.”

Highlighting the importance of community support, he praised local coaches like Rawaqa and Leawere for their professionalism and dedication. As he looked ahead to the 2025 season, Little conveyed a strong message of pride in wearing the blue jersey: “All our own guys are just proud to be the men who wear the blue.” He encouraged current players to give back to the rugby community by sharing their knowledge with the next generation of athletes.

The Fijian Drua is deeply committed to fostering local talent and community engagement, as illustrated by their pre-season activities, including outreach initiatives in Kadavu. This focus on unity and teamwork provides a hopeful outlook for future successes as they prepare for the upcoming Super Rugby season.

Little’s visit not only strengthens the connection between past and present players but also reinforces vital themes of collaboration and community involvement essential in shaping the future of rugby in Fiji. His encouragement for players to give back illuminates a promising path for the next generation of athletes, reaffirming the spirit of rugby that pervades the nation.
