Attorney General Graham Leung emphasized the vital role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in ensuring government accountability and transparency during the opening of the Pacific and Fiji Right to Information Workshop in Suva. He noted that NGOs not only hold the government accountable but also help extend its services through various community networks.
Leung shared that the workshop’s agenda is meticulously crafted to cover essential elements of the Right to Information (RTI), including global trends, Pacific context, and international standards, which are crucial for developing a robust RTI Act. Participants will explore practical aspects such as submitting and processing requests, understanding exceptions, and navigating appeals and oversight mechanisms.
The workshop also aims to facilitate discussions on ensuring equal access to public information for all citizens, particularly for marginalized groups that may face risks of discrimination based on factors like gender, age, race, and socioeconomic status.
Leung highlighted the significant support from development partners such as UNESCO and the Fiji Council of Social Services. Their contributions and the introduction of the homegrown Kacivaka RTI tool are expected to enhance the workshop’s effectiveness and promote sustainable information access.
The weeklong event unites government officials from the region to share insights on RTI legislation and the progress made in their respective countries. This collaborative effort aims to strengthen democracy and enhance civic engagement through improved access to information.
This workshop not only fosters dialogue among regional leaders but also emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in information access, ensuring that every voice is heard and every citizen is empowered.
In summary, the workshop serves as a crucial platform for discussing mechanisms to enhance government transparency and reinforce the role of NGOs in promoting accountability, ultimately leading to greater civic engagement and informed communities.
