FLAG Football is positioning itself as a potential mainstay in Fiji’s sporting scene, offering an exciting blend of competition and community engagement. This non-contact variant of American Football, known in the US, Australia, and New Zealand, is designed for both men and women, and is quickly gaining traction in the Pacific Islands, with Fiji chosen as the launchpad for this initiative.
Recently, an NFL team, featuring trainers and American Football athlete Patrick Murtagh, has embarked on a mission to introduce the sport at a grassroots level through clinics in schools and communities throughout Fiji. “As part of our international growth strategy, we want to bring NFL Flag into the Pacific and grow participation for our game starting in Fiji and then wider into the Pacific over the next few years,” stated Charlotte Offord, general manager of NFL Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific.
Offord emphasized the organization’s ambition to replicate its successful programs in New Zealand and Australia, which saw remarkable growth from just 10 schools to 740 schools in three years. With a robust sports foundation already established in Fiji, the area appeared to be an ideal starting point for this new venture.
The successful introduction of Flag Football in Fiji has set the stage for the formation of a national federation, aimed at ensuring the sport’s development in the region. “Our goal is really to introduce the Fijian community to the game of Flag Football, encourage them, and help set up a sustainable platform for the game to be played,” Offord added. This federation will facilitate ongoing clinics, school engagement, and the provision of resources, equipment, and coaching to foster a widespread embrace of the sport.
Looking ahead, once the groundwork is laid in Fiji, the focus will shift toward expanding the sport further into the Pacific Islands, targeting countries like Tonga, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea. The movement towards Flag Football not only enhances competitive spirit but also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie in the region, paving the way for future sporting endeavors.
