The National Fire Authority (NFA) recently celebrated the inauguration of its first emergency pre-hospital ambulance, a significant milestone in advancing emergency services in Fiji. The event was led by Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, who emphasized the importance of government funding, including a notable allocation of $2.1 million for ambulance services in the upcoming 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Minister Nalumisa also reflected on the strides made since the enactment of the National Ambulance Service Act in 2010, which established the groundwork for the NFA’s current operations. He revealed that over the past five financial years, calls for ambulances represented 26 percent of all emergency calls received by the NFA, second only to private fire alarm requests.

In detailing the current year’s emergencies, Nalumisa reported that the NFA responded to 170 fire incidents and 152 road accidents. He assured attendees of the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the NFA, highlighted by a total allocation of $6.1 million for the Authority’s operations. The funding from the previous fiscal year facilitated the acquisition of two new ambulances, with additional funds poised to allow for further expansions of the ambulance fleet.

“We believe that every community in Fiji deserves access to advanced ambulance services,” Nalumisa asserted. He underscored the government’s plans to ensure that NFA personnel receive comprehensive training and are well-equipped to deliver urgent healthcare throughout the islands.

This initiative represents a critical development in enhancing emergency healthcare services in Fiji, reflecting a commitment to the well-being of its citizens and the provision of prompt medical assistance.

Overall, the launch of the NFA’s ambulance service signals a positive step toward improving emergency response across Fiji, which can only enhance public safety and health outcomes. As the NFA continues to grow and adapt, residents can look forward to better access to essential services in times of need.
