The National Fire Authority (NFA) has once again emphasized the importance of fire safety for homeowners and businesses. This advice from NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane follows two destructive fires that occurred recently, resulting in the loss of three homes and a building owned by Auto World Trading. Business owner Ravindra Lal was alerted by an employee about the warehouse fire while he was still at home. The affected property, which measures 5152 square meters, was insured with New India Insurance, but the damage assessment is ongoing as the building suffered 85% structural damage.

Additionally, the NFA’s Command Centre responded promptly to a fire in Cakacaka Place, Caubati, which was reported at 9:07 am. Firefighters from Valelevu and Suva stations worked together to contain the blaze, but unfortunately, three houses sustained structural damages.

Sowane has expressed concern over the recurrence of such incidents, despite continuous efforts to raise fire safety awareness in communities. In particular, he highlighted the potential benefits of subscribing to the Alarm Signalling Equipment (ASE) units designed to notify the NFA Command Centre at the first indication of fire. This alert system could offer businesses peace of mind by enabling quicker response times to fires.

Initial investigations indicate that the fire in Caubati was possibly caused by a child playing with matches, underscoring the critical need for vigilant supervision and education about fire risks, especially involving children. The NFA has initiated investigations to determine the probable causes of these fires and continues to advocate for heightened awareness and proactive measures to prevent such tragedies.

In previous incidents, including fires at other commercial and residential locations, Sowane has continually urged the public and business owners to adopt basic safety measures such as securing flammable items, turning off unused power outlets, and ensuring windows and doors are well-secured, particularly as the festive season approaches.

These continued efforts by the NFA highlight a commitment to improving fire safety education and community preparedness. More proactive safety measures and a collective effort from all stakeholders can significantly mitigate the risks and impact of fires, fostering a safer environment for everyone.
