The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and awarded badges to new paramedics during an event at its headquarters in Suva. CEO Puamau Sowane emphasized that the department was created to improve oversight and efficiency, as previous operations were managed by fire officers without specialized training.

The new department aims to train professionals who can competently manage medical emergencies. Sowane stated that establishing the Paramedics Department is a step toward enhancing the NFA’s effectiveness in emergency situations.

A dedicated manager has been appointed to lead the department, and a portion of the fire station has been designated for a new paramedic center. While specialized paramedics are still being developed, some firefighters have completed training programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department is equipped to provide support to both accident victims and firefighters during fire incidents, with paramedics on standby at emergency scenes.

Currently, the NFA has nine operational ambulances and plans to import six additional specialized paramedic ambulances that are designed not only for patient transport but also for delivering pre-hospital care.

In his closing remarks, Sowane urged the community to exercise caution during the festive season to minimize the risk of fire-related incidents.

This initiative marks a significant improvement in emergency medical response capabilities, showing a commendable commitment to enhancing public safety and care during emergencies.

Overall, the establishment of this new department and the investment in additional ambulances highlight the NFA’s dedication to effective emergency services and community safety.
