The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially launched its Paramedics Ambulance Department and has welcomed new paramedics during a ceremony at their headquarters in Suva. NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane highlighted that the Ambulance Department was previously managed by operational officers. However, due to inadequate oversight, there were issues with the effective use of government funds.
The goal of this new department is to enhance training for its professionals, enabling them to manage medical emergencies more effectively. Sowane emphasized the importance of having dedicated managers within the department and noted that a portion of the fire station has been allocated for the construction of a new paramedic center. While specialized paramedics are not yet fully in place, some firefighters have received training through the Ministry of Health.
This newly established Emergency Ambulance and Paramedic Health Services Department aims to serve victims and firefighters during emergencies. Sowane pointed out that during fire incidents, paramedics will be positioned at the site to care for both victims and responders. Currently, the NFA operates nine ambulances and plans to introduce an additional six paramedic ambulances to enhance their service delivery.
Although acquiring these specialized ambulances requires significant investment, Sowane explained that they are designed not only for transport but also equipped with pre-hospital care capabilities. He urged the public to exercise caution during the festive season to prevent fire-related incidents.
This initiative marks a significant step towards improving emergency medical response in the region, showcasing the NFA’s commitment to safeguarding the community and supporting its responders in challenging situations.
In summary, the establishment of the Paramedics Ambulance Department is a positive development that aims to optimize emergency responses and enhances the overall safety of the community. As training and resources improve, the potential for better emergency management increases, fostering a sense of security during both everyday situations and festive celebrations.
