Concerns have emerged regarding the adequacy of compensation for firefighters at the National Fire Authority (NFA), as recently discussed in a meeting with the Standing Committee on Social Affairs. Committee member Aliki Bia expressed worries that the current allowances may not adequately reflect the life-threatening hazards faced by these brave individuals.

NFA Acting Chief Executive Joel Israel acknowledged the escalating dangers firefighters encounter, pointing out that increasing fire loads—caused by overdevelopment, illegal building extensions, and unsafe premises usage—heighten risks not just for firefighters but for the public as well. He stated, “Some people, some of the public, use the premises as storerooms. That actually hype and hikes up the fire loads, the fire risks, endangering themselves and also endangering the people outside of their perimeters.”

While Israel confirmed that firefighters do receive fixed duty allowances, he indicated that budget constraints limit the current compensation structure. To enhance financial security for firefighters, the NFA offers a benefits package that includes medical insurance applicable both domestically and internationally, as well as life insurance coverage. This life insurance plan provides a payout of $10,000 and funeral benefits for those who lose their lives in the line of duty.

This ongoing dialogue about firefighter compensation highlights the need for a comprehensive review to ensure that the men and women who risk their lives for the community are adequately supported and protected. As the discussion unfolds, it is crucial for stakeholders to work collaboratively towards solutions that not only recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters but also enhance their overall safety and welfare.
