Newworld IGA has recently made a significant donation of $65,625 to the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS), highlighting its commitment to supporting cancer awareness and patient care in Fiji. This funding was raised through the company’s Pinktober campaign, which took place during the months of October and November last year, with contributions from customers, suppliers, and vendors.

Over the last decade, Newworld IGA has donated approximately $360,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society, underscoring its long-standing commitment to enhancing cancer awareness and patient support. Sameer Patel, the head of merchandise and marketing at Newworld IGA, expressed gratitude to the donors and acknowledged the society’s essential work in cancer advocacy, stating, “This achievement is a testament to the generosity of our community and the tireless efforts of our suppliers.”

The funds will be allocated to the Fiji Cancer Society’s mission, particularly to support community palliative care programs, which are vital for patients facing life-limiting conditions like cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Atonio Takala, the society’s finance chair, noted that this donation would enhance training for community health workers in the Nadi medical area. He emphasized the critical role of palliative care in providing support for patients and their families during challenging times.

Takala pointed out that FCS has already completed two phases of training within the Central Division and Nadroga/Navosa subdivision, equipping over 191 participants with necessary skills such as pain management and emotional support, which are crucial during patients’ final stages of life. He expressed hope that this year’s funding will also allow for expanded training of community health workers in other areas across Fiji in the coming years.

This collaborative effort between Newworld IGA and the Fiji Cancer Society exemplifies the positive impact of community engagement, reinforcing hope and support for individuals affected by cancer. As corporate responsibility continues to play an essential role in public health efforts, partnerships like these can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those battling cancer and underscore the importance of sustained community involvement in health-related initiatives.
