Newworld IGA has proudly announced a generous donation of $65,625 to the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS), reinforcing its commitment to promoting cancer awareness and enhancing patient care in Fiji. This funding was collected through the successful Pinktober campaign, which ran throughout October and November of last year with contributions from customers, suppliers, and vendors.

Over the past decade, Newworld IGA has contributed around $360,000 to the Fiji Cancer Society, highlighting its dedication to supporting cancer awareness initiatives and patient assistance. Sameer Patel, head of merchandise and marketing at Newworld IGA, expressed his gratitude to all donors and recognized the essential role of the society in cancer advocacy, stating, “This achievement is a testament to the generosity of our community and the tireless efforts of our suppliers.”

The donation will support the Fiji Cancer Society’s mission, particularly in enhancing community palliative care programs that are crucial for patients facing life-limiting conditions, including cancer and other non-communicable diseases. Atonio Takala, finance chair of FCS, mentioned that these funds would facilitate additional training for community health workers in the Nadi medical area, which is vital for providing patient and family support during difficult times.

Takala highlighted that FCS has already completed two phases of training within the Central Division and Nadroga/Navosa subdivision, benefiting over 191 participants with critical skills like pain management and emotional support that are essential during patients’ final stages of life. He expressed optimism that this year’s funding will lead to expanded training for community health workers in various regions across Fiji in the years to come.

This partnership between Newworld IGA and the Fiji Cancer Society demonstrates the profound impact of community engagement and the vital support it offers to those affected by cancer. As corporate responsibility increasingly shapes public health efforts, collaborations like this one can significantly improve the lives of individuals battling cancer and highlight the importance of ongoing community involvement in health initiatives. This encouraging development showcases a strong communal spirit and hope for a better future for patients and their families.
