New Zealand has recently allocated funding for a Country Liaison Officer position in Fiji, with the primary goal of enhancing the Recognised Seasonal Employer (RSE) Work Scheme. Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh expressed that this initiative underscores the New Zealand government’s commitment to boosting relationships and aiding in Fiji’s economic development.

The newly appointed Liaison Officer will be instrumental in managing the scheme effectively, addressing challenges faced by workers and approved employers alike. Their role will include providing support, guidance, and pastoral care, ensuring that workers are properly informed of their rights and obligations within the framework of the scheme.

Singh noted that this initiative is not only beneficial for the Fijian workforce engaged in the RSE scheme but also contributes to the broader economic growth of Fiji. Currently, nearly 1,000 Fijians are employed in New Zealand under this scheme, a significant increase from its inception, highlighting the mutual advantages that arise from this collaboration.

Prior discussions have also shown commitment from both Fiji and New Zealand to bolster labor mobility partnerships and improve working conditions for Fijian workers. The introduction of the Liaison Officer aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance support mechanisms, echoing sentiments expressed during high-level meetings that stress safeguarding worker welfare and promoting regional labor mobility.

This proactive approach is promising for Fijian workers, as it emphasizes a sustained partnership that facilitates better livelihoods and fosters cultural exchange, demonstrating potential for a positive future in labor mobility between the two nations.
