Students at Yasawa South Secondary School in Waya Lailai, Yasawa, are now able to commence their secondary education without the need to travel to distant towns and cities. The Education Minister, Aseri Radrodro, officially inaugurated the school last month and welcomed its inaugural cohort of Year 9 students along with seven dedicated teachers.
This new educational institution will cater to students from several nearby villages including Namara, Naboro, Yamata, Yalobi, Natawa, Nalauwaki, and Vuwa, as well as from local schools such as Namara Village School, Ratu Naivalu Memorial School, and Viwa Island School. The establishment of the school comes in response to community demands for a dedicated secondary education facility, which was highlighted during Minister Radrodro’s visit last year when he also inaugurated a new ablution block.
During his address to the students, Mr. Radrodro encouraged families to fully utilize the school’s offerings, emphasizing how it reduces travel expenses and enables children to remain close to their communities. He stressed that location should not hinder educational achievements, pointing to the success of Waidina and Vunisea Secondary Schools, both of which reported 100% Year 12 pass rates last year.
Mr. Radrodro characterized Yasawa South Secondary School as a pivotal investment in the futures of the children, the local community, and the nation as a whole. To ensure that students are accommodated during the inaugural year, the school management committee has creatively adapted hostel facilities into classrooms. This innovative approach reflects the commitment to providing quality education within the community.
The opening of Yasawa South Secondary School marks a significant step forward in enhancing educational accessibility for the region and is expected to have a positive impact on the local populace.
