A weight limit of 19,000 kg has been implemented for ATR72 operations at Waiqele Airport in Labasa, aiming to enhance the runway’s safety and structural integrity. This decision follows a comprehensive review conducted earlier this year with the Fiji Link team, incorporating updated findings from Beca Consultants regarding the Pavement Classification Rating (PCR).

Fiji Airports CEO, Mesake Nawari, emphasized the necessity of this measure to prevent further pavement deterioration at the airport, which has suffered from damage due to heavy braking during landings. The new weight restriction aligns with international aviation standards mandated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which requires compliance with the Aircraft Classification Rating (ACR) and PCR systems by November 28, 2024.

Nawari warned against neglecting the recent pavement assessment, stating that ignoring the findings could pose severe safety risks. The PCR report indicates that the existing pavement at Labasa Airport cannot safely accommodate the maximum take-off weight of the ATR 72-600 or C-27J Spartan aircraft, thus necessitating the imposed restrictions.

Fiji Airports, in collaboration with Fiji Link, is actively exploring remediation options for the runway’s pavement condition to restore full operational capacity in the future. They will also increase the frequency of pavement inspections and address any identified defects promptly to ensure safety and operational continuity during this period. Although current limitations impact flight operations, they are ultimately foundational for long-term improvements in aviation safety and infrastructure in Fiji.

This proactive approach not only prioritizes safety but also signals positive intentions for future upgrades that could enhance the travel experience and infrastructure of the region, benefiting both residents and tourists alike.
