United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Karla Robin Hershey from the United States as the new UN Resident Coordinator in Samoa, following approval from the Samoan government. Based in Apia, Hershey will lead the Multi-Country Office for Samoa, as well as coordinate UN development efforts in the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau.

Hershey brings a robust background to her new position, with over 30 years of experience across development coordination, international relations, resource mobilization, change management, and humanitarian affairs. Her most recent role was as the Resident Coordinator in Bhutan, and previously she served as the Representative and Country Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Liberia, among other significant leadership roles.

Her extensive experience within the UN includes senior positions as Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in countries like Serbia and Lesotho. Additionally, during her time with WFP, she contributed to UN reform and managed operations in various countries, including Eswatini, Syria, Malawi, and Tanzania.

Hershey’s career started with the UN as a humanitarian affairs officer with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Angola. Before joining the UN, she worked with international NGOs such as World Vision International and Rotary International, and served in the United States Peace Corps.

She holds a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) and has pursued post-graduate courses at the London School of Economics, along with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Southern Methodist University. Hershey’s educational background includes university coursework at Oxford University, emphasizing her commitment to her professional development.

This appointment comes at a critical time as the Pacific region faces several challenges, including climate change and humanitarian needs. Hershey’s wealth of experience positions her to effectively lead collaborative efforts aimed at sustainable development and resilience for the Pacific island nations.

The focus on addressing climate change and enhancing humanitarian response through her role reflects the UN’s ongoing commitment to supporting vulnerable regions. Hershey’s leadership is expected to inspire new initiatives and strengthen development cooperation in the Pacific, fostering hope for a more sustainable and equitable future.
