The new National Rural Development Policy aims to prioritize climate change, placing a significant emphasis on resilience and inclusive mitigation strategies. Outgoing Minister Sakiasi Ditoka highlighted the importance of community engagement in addressing pressing challenges and ensuring that the needs of rural populations are integrated into national planning initiatives.

The policy will revolve around climate adaptation, disaster preparedness, and the implementation of sustainable practices, all designed to empower rural and maritime communities to better manage the effects of climate change. Ditoka remarked on the critical role of climate action in safeguarding livelihoods, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable growth in vulnerable areas.

“It’s a huge part of the National Rural Development Policy. It’s quite central in the way that we think to ensure we are thinking ahead, not just reacting, but being proactive in our planning. That’s the whole point of this,” Ditoka stated.

He acknowledged that many remote islands continue to suffer from isolation, high transportation costs, limited access to services, and increasing climate risks — challenges that have persisted over the years.

Solo Tuima, Manager for Rural Development, emphasized the necessity of reviewing existing policies, which is crucial for effectively addressing the current issues faced by these communities. He expressed gratitude to government colleagues for facilitating the review of the Integrated Rural Development Framework (IRDF), which was approved by Cabinet last October.

Tuima asserted that modern and inclusive policies are essential for fostering sustainable development, improving living conditions, and enhancing resilience among rural and maritime communities throughout the country. This approach not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for a more sustainable future, reflecting a commitment to proactively tackle the challenges posed by climate change.
