A new Combined Law Enforcement and Social Crisis Agency Taskforce has been established to enhance national responses to critical issues such as drug harm, youth vulnerability, and emerging crime trends. The inaugural meeting of the taskforce, chaired by Selena Kuruleca, Permanent Secretary for Justice, marked the beginning of a coordinated effort among various agencies to improve community wellbeing and align government priorities ahead of 2026, particularly concerning the drug crisis and HIV.

The initiative, launched by Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga, aimed to foster a shared understanding among stakeholders concerning their roles and planned actions. Kuruleca noted that the gathering helped to clarify major priorities as the agencies prepare to address the challenges posed by drug crises and HIV in the upcoming years.

A list of agreed priorities has already been created and will be reviewed and implemented by leading agencies shortly. These priorities align with the Counter Narcotics National Strategy, the National Security Strategy, and the HIV National Action Plan, all of which support the National Development Plan.

Kuruleca expressed optimism that the taskforce’s efforts could lead to necessary legislative and policy reforms, with key reforms already identified among the ministries involved. Funding for these initiatives will adhere to standard budgeting processes, with each agency operating within its designated budget. Any requests for extra funding will go through the government budget process.

Additionally, some technical and donor partners have shown verbal commitment to assisting with capacity building and modernizing legislation, indicating a supportive network around the taskforce’s goals. Updates on the taskforce’s progress will be communicated to the public through mainstream media channels, as well as the Ministry of Justice’s and government’s social media platforms.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing pressing social issues and demonstrates a commitment to improving the lives of citizens while responding to changing crime dynamics, offering hope for a more resilient future.
