Dr. Eci Tekuru Naisele has been appointed as the new director of the Fiji Higher Education Commission (FHEC), as announced by Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro. This decision marks a strategic move aimed at shaping the future of higher education in Fiji.

With over 30 years of experience in the education sector, Dr. Naisele has held various roles, including classroom teacher, senior leader within the Ministry of Education, and most recently, Registrar at the Pacific Theological College. His extensive background equips him well to lead the Commission as it embarks on a new chapter of development. Minister Radrodro emphasized Dr. Naisele’s deep familiarity with Fiji’s educational landscape, which he believes is essential for guiding the Commission forward.

Dr. Naisele holds a PhD from Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi in New Zealand and was recognized with the Outstanding Indigenous Research Award in 2023 for his dedication to advancing indigenous knowledge and research. His new role, effective from May 5, is expected to contribute significantly towards enhancing the quality, accessibility, and inclusivity of higher education in Fiji.

This appointment comes at a crucial time as Fiji faces long-standing educational challenges, particularly in literacy, numeracy, and teacher shortages. Dr. Naisele’s leadership is anticipated to catalyze positive changes that align with the government’s commitment to educational reform, setting a hopeful tone for the future of higher education in the nation.

Dr. Naisele’s extensive experience and university affiliations underline a promising direction for education in Fiji, fostering an environment where students have opportunities to thrive and contribute to national development. The government’s focus on enhancing educational quality bodes well for the future, as Fiji aims to create an educated and skilled workforce capable of driving progress and innovation.
