The Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalusima, has appointed a new acting CEO for the Ba Town Council, responding to a strike by 34 general workers earlier today who were protesting grievances against the previous acting CEO. Mr. Nalusima visited Ba Town to address the concerns of the council workers and expressed his commitment to resolving the key issues raised. The new acting CEO is set to begin their role on February 27, 2025.

After the announcement, it was reported that the striking workers will return to their duties on Thursday, February 27, 2024. Mr. Nalusima underscored the importance of cooperation and dialogue between municipal council leaders and staff to ensure quality service delivery to communities throughout Fiji.

This situation highlights the ongoing changes in local governance, aligning with trends observed in leadership transitions within other municipal councils. There has been considerable scrutiny over the salaries and responsibilities of acting CEOs in various councils, including those in Nasinu and Suva, stimulating discussions about their compensation and effectiveness. The government’s focus on these appointments indicates a commitment to improving governance and service delivery, which could have a positive impact on local communities.

As the process for recruiting permanent CEOs continues, there is potential for enhanced accountability and better management practices within councils. The recent developments in the Ba Town Council demonstrate a proactive approach being taken to ensure local government operates effectively, ultimately benefiting the community and fostering a more responsive governance system.
