Adrian Sunil Parshu Ram is poised to join the Board of Directors for the Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd., following a nomination from Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, and approval from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. This nomination comes after the resignation of Atil Narayan, who had dedicated five years of service to the board.

Ram, who is anticipated to bring a wealth of experience in law, accounting, and business management, has been viewed as a valuable addition to the board. Minister Singh expressed confidence that Ram’s background will significantly enhance the FSC’s initiatives aimed at strengthening the sugar industry in Fiji. Singh also took a moment to extend gratitude to Narayan for his commitment and contributions during his tenure.

The dynamics of the FSC board are crucial, especially as the corporation navigates the challenges within the sugar industry. The recent increase in fees and allowances for directors, which escalated to approximately $72,000 in 2024, reflects a strategic move to attract experienced leadership. This increase follows a board expansion that now includes nine members, emphasizing the board’s commitment to effective governance and its efforts to put the sugar industry back on a sustainable path.

In light of the recent discussions at the International Sugar Organization (ISO) Council and meetings with international players in the sugar market, like Tate and Lyle, there is a collective optimism regarding Fiji’s sugar industry. The focus on sustainability and strategic partnerships indicates a proactive approach to re-establishing Fiji’s prominence in the global market.

Overall, the appointment of Ram to the FSC board represents a hopeful turn for the industry as it works to recover from past challenges and pursue sustainable growth moving forward. The merging of expertise from both Ram and the expanded board could prove vital for rejuvenating Fiji’s sugar sector, potentially benefiting local farmers and the economy at large.
