Newly-installed Tui Nayau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, has urged the vanua o Nayau to embrace unity and compassion as they progress together. This call for togetherness resonates with themes echoed during similar recent ceremonies held across the Lau region of Fiji, where traditional leadership and community resilience were prominently highlighted.
Ratu Tevita expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in the traditional ceremony at Narocivo Village. He acknowledged the presence of religious leaders and the Masi ni Vanua o Nayau, stressing the significance of the event and the challenges that led to this moment. “This chiefly title comes with responsibility,” he noted, emphasizing that the Tui Nayau title is not just an honor but a commitment requiring strength, humility, and service to the community.
The previous Tui Nayau title was held by the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Ratu Tevita’s father, until his passing in 2004, leaving the position vacant for 21 years. Ratu Tevita’s installation symbolizes a resurgence of cultural and leadership continuity in the community, marking an important historical transition that is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Lau Group.
In line with his sentiments during the ceremony, Ratu Tevita called on traditional leaders under his guidance to serve their tribes selflessly and to nurture love and unity within their ranks. His emphasis on looking after one another aligns with a broader narrative within the Lau communities, where recent discussions have focused on collective cultural pride amid modern challenges.
The installation ceremony also reaffirms a commitment to upholding Fijian traditions while nurturing new beginnings, echoing previously reported sentiments of community strength and resilience during turbulent times. As the Lau community anticipates a brighter future under Ratu Tevita’s guidance, there is a prevailing spirit of optimism that underscores their shared cultural heritage. The overarching message promotes the idea that with unity and collaborative leadership, there is hope for navigating future challenges together.
