A new fire station is set to be established in the Natadola area, aimed at enhancing emergency response times in response to the increasing number of fire incidents and road accidents along the busy Sigatoka-Nadi corridor. This area has seen over 205 structural fires causing damages estimated at around $500,000 over the past six years, as reported by Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa during the groundbreaking ceremony.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) also highlighted its involvement in 125 road accident rescues and 1,135 ambulance evacuations in the same corridor, underscoring the need for improved emergency services in the region. During the ceremony, Nalumisa remarked on the significance of the new station, stating, “This plan recognizes the necessity for a fire station due to increasing tourist investments in the region,” and emphasized the importance of supporting the adjoining Sigatoka and Nadi fire stations in firefighting and rescue operations.

NFA Chief Executive Puamau Sowane noted that this new facility is expected to significantly reduce emergency response times, potentially saving lives in a high-traffic area known for road accidents. The development is projected to benefit not only the local community but also the five hotels and resorts, eight schools (including five primary schools), two early childhood education centers, and one secondary school in proximity.

The project is estimated to cost over $2.8 million, with $1 million allocated for Phase 1 from the national budget for 2024-2025. This initial phase will primarily involve civil works and fencing, with a lead consultant appointed to oversee the completion of the project.

Similar developments are also occurring in the region, such as the recent $400,000 upgrade to the Levuka Fire Station, which aimed to enhance fire safety and emergency response capabilities due to the area’s rich historical context and the necessity of protecting its heritage structures.

Overall, the establishment of the Natadola fire station signals a proactive approach toward improving public safety and emergency preparedness. With ongoing investments and collaborations, there is hope for further enhancements in emergency services across Fiji, ultimately leading to safer communities.
