Richard Walker, the former coach of the USA Women’s Rugby Sevens team, has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, according to the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This decision follows the conclusion of Saiasi Fuli’s contract in December. Walker, a New Zealander with over 15 years of coaching experience, assumes the role with a wealth of international expertise that includes coaching positions with Japan Women’s Rugby Sevens and the Auckland Storm.

Walker is known for fostering high-performance standards in rugby, having successfully led the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship. His experience also includes guiding the USA Women’s 7s team at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and the World Cup in San Francisco, where they notably exceeded expectations.

The Fiji Rugby Union expressed optimism regarding Walker’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of his vision and experience as the team prepares for significant upcoming international events, including the HSBC SVNS Series and the quest for Olympic qualification. Additionally, the FRU acknowledged the contributions of interim head coach Timoci Volavola, ensuring a collaborative approach as they move forward.

Walker’s appointment represents a strategic decision aimed at enhancing the Fijiana 7s team’s competitive edge globally. Within the Fijian rugby community, there is a hopeful sentiment that Walker’s extensive background and coaching philosophy will bring forth a successful future, significantly contributing to the development of women’s rugby in Fiji.

This leadership change is seen not just as a transition but as a fresh opportunity to leverage existing talent while integrating new strategies for growth, fostering a promising atmosphere as the Fijiana 7s team aims for excellence on the world stage.
