The government has nominated Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, known as Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, for the position of Head of State and President of Fiji. This decision follows the formal withdrawal of the current President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, from consideration for re-nomination.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced in a statement issued around midnight that he consulted with the Parliamentary Caucus of the People’s Alliance, which has officially endorsed Ratu Naiqama for the presidential nomination. Rabuka confirmed that Turaga na Tui Cakau has given his consent to be nominated.

The Prime Minister plans to present Ratu Naiqama’s name during a special session of Parliament next Thursday, in accordance with section 84(2) of the Constitution.

On October 17, 2024, Rabuka had reached out to President Ratu Wiliame seeking approval for his second term in office, but received a response on October 21 withdrawing the nomination. The Prime Minister praised Ratu Wiliame for his dedicated service and integrity during his presidency, highlighting his role in ensuring a smooth transition of government following the December 2022 general election.

A traditional thank-you ceremony will be held to honor Ratu Wiliame at the conclusion of his term. The Prime Minister urged all Fijians to collaborate with the Coalition Government to foster national unity, social cohesion, peace, stability, and prosperity.
