The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has recently activated sixteen dairy leases between 2023 and 2025, according to Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu. These leases are significant in supporting local farmers engaged in milk production, contributing importantly to rural livelihoods and enhancing food security within the region. Currently, the TLTB oversees a total of 73 dairy leases, with the 16 new activations marking a productive period alongside nine lease renewals, where existing farmers have had their leases extended.

The six newly activated leases stem from either fresh applications or those from previously inactive leaseholders. Together, these leases encompass over 290 hectares of land, with annual rent rates established by agreement with landowners. Vasu indicated that these efforts align with the government’s broader commitment to promoting productive land use and providing income support for landowning units.

In related developments, the TLTB has made notable strides in managing agricultural lands, including addressing lease arrears and enhancing utilization of previously underused agricultural leases. These initiatives, along with the recent dairy lease activations, signal a positive trajectory for rural development and agricultural sustainability in Fiji.

By focusing on effective land management and encouraging engagement with local communities, there is hope that these measures will lead to improved economic opportunities and food security for iTaukei landowners and the wider public. The approach taken not only emphasizes agricultural productivity but also prioritizes sustainable practices that could benefit future generations.
