The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is anticipated to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. This development comes after offers were sent to various interested candidates, with the FRU currently awaiting their responses.
Among the applicants is the renowned Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in rugby sevens, who has expressed interest in the Fijiana 7s coaching role. Serevi brings valuable experience, having previously coached the Indian Women’s 7s team. Additionally, former player Sireli Bobo has also emerged as a potential candidate for these coaching positions, though Nayacalevu has not disclosed other applicants.
In a positive initiative, Serevi is expected to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching staff to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad, highlighting a commitment to nurturing young talent within the rugby community. Recently, Serevi was appointed the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, solidifying his influential role in the sport.
The need for new leadership stems from the departure of Mosese Rauluni, who vacated the Fijiana 15s head coach position in October after leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing their qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. Rauluni’s legacy includes notable achievements, such as guiding the Fijiana to their first win against Japan, setting a high bar for his successor.
On the other hand, the Fijiana 7s team has been without a head coach since the contract of Saiasi Fuli was not renewed in December 2023, after an impactful five-year tenure during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
