The Valelawa Primary School in Macuata is set to see significant improvements in its educational facilities, as a new classroom block is being constructed at a cost of $45,000. The groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by the Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro. For the past two years, students in Years Three and Four have been attending classes in tents after their original classroom building was devastated by Tropical Cyclone Yasa in 2021.

The introduction of a new classroom block aims to provide a safer and more stable learning environment for the students, who have had to endure difficult conditions while studying under temporary structures. Head of School, Abinesh Prasad, expressed relief over the moving progress. He stated that the previous classroom was unsafe, necessitating the relocation of classes to tents.

Minister Radrodro emphasized that every child deserves a conducive setting for their studies and acknowledged the school’s vital role in educating children from surrounding villages, including Voloca, Nakacagi, Naua, Natekateka, and Batiri. He expressed pride in the community’s commitment to education.

In addition to the classroom block, an ablution block was also opened, further improving sanitary and hygiene practices at the school. The minister assured that the new classroom block construction would be completed by the end of the year, with oversight from the school committee to ensure the contractor adheres to the timeline.

Parents, such as Mohammed Rizwan, have voiced their gratitude, noting improvements in their children’s study conditions and the positive start to the year. Valelawa Primary School, established in 1962, currently has a roll of 150 students.

This initiative not only represents an investment in infrastructure but also reflects a commitment to enhancing the educational landscape for future generations. The hopeful outlook is that with better facilities, students will be able to excel academically and enjoy a more favorable learning environment.
