The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has emphasized the significance of the Child Justice Act 2024 in prioritizing the welfare of children. Drawing from his experiences as a lawyer, Vosarogo underscored the urgent need for legislation that offers children a second chance.
Reflecting on a past experience in Juvenile Court, Vosarogo recounted a moment when he witnessed young individuals, around 13 to 14 years old, facing serious charges like aggravated robbery. He highlighted a troubling exchange where a father expressed his reluctance to be responsible for his son, resulting in the child being placed as a ward of the State by the magistrate.
Vosarogo stated that the new legislation aims to prevent such heartbreaking scenarios. The Child Justice Act introduces a presumption in favor of the child’s release, ensuring that their best interests are the primary focus. He believes that child justice can effectively be addressed through various diversion programs that not only minimize stigma but also pave the way for a brighter future for young offenders.
The Act aims to foster opportunities for intervention, helping children understand their inherent worth and potential. By removing the stigma associated with convictions, the Child Justice Bill hopes to transform lives positively and help young people become productive members of society.
This new approach towards child justice reflects a flourishing understanding of the need for compassion and support in the legal system, reinforcing the belief that every child deserves a chance to redeem themselves and succeed. This positive shift in policy illustrates an encouraging trend towards progressive reform that could have lasting benefits for future generations.
