Nawaisomo Primary School in the Naitasiri district now has a new 100 by 70-meter sports ground, handed over by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. The facility, funded by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, cost more than 49,800, and the government says it will open up ample opportunities for local talent to grow, whether they pursue sport professionally or simply stay active and healthy.
Minister Saukuru told the district’s young people that the ground belongs to them and urged them to use it well. He encouraged the youth to train hard, play fair, and see the new facility as a stepping stone toward their dreams. Whether students aspire to represent Fiji on the international stage, or simply enjoy the camaraderie of playing with friends, the new ground is meant to be a space where they can develop their skills and confidence.
This installation mirrors a broader push across Fiji to bolster sports infrastructure and youth development. Nearby and across the country, recently opened facilities include multi-purpose and sports courts such as the Lagilagi Multipurpose Court in Raiwaqa, which cost about 170,800, and the Kamikamica Park Multipurpose Court in Raffle Range, Lautoka, funded to around 171,439. These facilities are built to host volleyball, basketball, and netball, and are expected to serve as hubs for training, competitions, and community gathering—aligning with national aims to promote healthier lifestyles and nurture the next generation of athletes.
Local leaders emphasize that these spaces are more than just venues for sport; they are community assets that foster discipline, teamwork, and resilience among youth. With the Nawaisomo ground now available to students, teachers, and families, officials hope it will inspire ongoing participation in sports and contribute to a brighter, more active future for the highlands.
Editor’s note: The continued rollout of school and community sports facilities signals a hopeful trajectory for youth engagement in sports across Fiji, offering new pathways for talent development and community connection. If sustained support and maintenance follow, these spaces could become engines of local pride and long-term health benefits for communities nationwide.
