Netflix has announced its agreement to acquire Warner Bros Discovery’s film and television studios, along with the streaming service HBO Max, for approximately $108.5 billion. This significant acquisition follows a competitive bidding process, primarily between Netflix and Paramount, led by David Ellison, who sought to secure the entire Warner Bros. entity.
As part of the merger, Netflix will gain access to a treasure trove of popular content, including iconic shows and films like “The Big Bang Theory,” “Game of Thrones,” and “The Wizard of Oz,” which will enhance its already extensive library. This move is anticipated to be a major boost for Netflix, positioning it as a dominant player within the streaming landscape.
The completion of the transaction is slated to happen post the planned separation of Warner Bros’s global networks division, Discovery Global, into a new publicly traded company, which is expected to reach fruition by the third quarter of 2026.
This development marks a new chapter in the streaming wars, potentially reshaping viewer options and solidifying Netflix’s position at the forefront of the entertainment industry.
