Netball Fiji’s president RubyAnn Sorovaki has emphasized the importance of enhancing local netball competitions this year. In a discussion about potential improvements for the sport, she highlighted that strengthening the tournament structure in Fiji could significantly facilitate the selection process for national teams.

Sorovaki noted, “We need to intensify our competitions to allow for selection of players into the high-performance teams.” By creating clear pathways from club-level competitions to national competitions, the sport can nurture talent more effectively. She called for hosting high-quality games that would expand the pool of players eligible for selection across all levels.

Additionally, Sorovaki underscored the critical role of grassroots development, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to collaborating closely with various stakeholders. “Our focus remains on assisting our districts in their work on the ground running games and capacity building for members,” she stated.

In conjunction with these developments, fitness testing for the Fiji Pearls extended squad will take place today at the HPU Gym in Laucala at 8:30 am, with 56 players participating under the guidance of interim head coach Jioweli Vakamoce.

Overall, the emphasis on local competition and grassroots development presents a hopeful pathway for the growth of netball in Fiji. As the sport strengthens at the foundational level, it equips emerging talent to excel on national and international stages, ultimately benefiting the overall landscape of netball in the region.
