The Navua Hospital Inpatient and Birthing Unit is currently closed due to concerns about structural integrity. Issues were first detected by the hospital staff in May, leading to the decision to close the building for necessary infrastructure assessments and renovations.
In response to these challenges, the maternity unit has been relocated to the Administration Block within the outpatient building, allowing maternity services to continue. Patients needing ongoing inpatient care and specialist obstetric services are now being referred to the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital.
The Ministry of Health has communicated these service adjustments to the community, ensuring that local members are informed. On average, Navua Hospital conducts about 15 deliveries each month and has successfully managed 289 border patients through stabilization, admission, transfer, or discharge.
To address the issues, the Ministry of Health is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Public Works and other partners for comprehensive assessments and repairs. Further engineering evaluations are anticipated in the coming weeks to establish the extent of the repairs required to restore the hospital’s full functionality.
Despite the closure of the inpatient and birthing unit, Navua Hospital continues to provide essential health care services, including primary health care, emergency services, maternal and child health services, outpatient and special outpatient services, as well as radiology, laboratory services, physiotherapy, and dietetics. Family planning and maternal and child health clinics are currently operating from the Old Navua Hospital.
The health team at Navua Hospital remains dedicated to serving the communities of Serua, Namosi, and Beqa, with support from various local administrative offices. The Ministry of Health emphasizes its commitment to resolving the infrastructural issues at the hospital and appreciates the dedication of hospital staff in maintaining essential service delivery during these trying times.
