Over 2,200 students with disabilities are currently enrolled in both special and mainstream schools, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. He made this announcement during the recent Special and Inclusive Education (SIE) Talanoa, AGM, Wellness, and Awards (TAWA) Conference.

Radrodro emphasized the significance of special and inclusive education and recognized the pivotal role educators play in shaping the futures of children with disabilities. He praised the impressive progress made so far but noted that additional work is still required. “Our goal remains to ensure that every student, regardless of their abilities, has access to a quality education,” he stated.

Highlighting successful initiatives, he mentioned efforts to facilitate students’ integration into regular schools, the implementation of a new Year 1-4 Learning and Needs curriculum, and increased funding for special and inclusive education programs. He also acknowledged the unwavering dedication of special and inclusive educators, who have shown resilience despite the many challenges they encounter in their vital roles.

Radrodro encouraged teachers to continue their work with empathy, compassion, and inclusivity, reminding them that the true value of their contributions goes beyond awards and accolades. “You are a class of your own, and I have every confidence that you deserve more than what can be presented here tonight,” he expressed.

He also recognized the vital support from development partners, particularly the Australian Government, as well as the Fiji Disabled Persons Federation and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.

This event not only reflects on past achievements but also serves as a foundation for future advancements in education for students with disabilities. By committing to inclusivity and quality education for all, there is great potential to make meaningful differences in the lives of these students and in society as a whole.

In summary, while significant progress has been made, the focus continues to be on enhancing educational opportunities for children with disabilities, fostering an environment of empathy and support in the educational landscape.
