The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs is currently conducting public consultations in Labasa regarding two critical legislative proposals: the Work Care Bill (Bill No. 7 of 2025) and the Accident Compensation (Amendment) Bill (Bill No. 8 of 2025). These engagements aim to gather insights from the community and stakeholders, particularly those affected by the proposed changes to the Accident Compensation Act.
In their visit, the Committee interacted with Heads of Schools and School Managers taking part in the Ministry of Education’s FEMIS training at Labasa College, seeking their feedback on the forthcoming amendments. Additionally, the Committee made a stop at Saint Mary’s Primary School, continuing their outreach across the Northern Division.
This initiative reflects Parliament’s commitment to ensure that the legislative process is inclusive, tapping into the perspectives of those who will be directly impacted by the proposed laws. The ongoing consultations are part of a broader effort to address the critical issues that have arisen within the workplace compensation framework, which has faced scrutiny due to unresolved claims and the backlog of cases passed from the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji (ACCF) to the Employment Ministry.
Building on insights from earlier consultations regarding the Work Care Bill, stakeholders such as the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) have highlighted the need for meaningful dialogue and adequate time for review, especially given the intricate nature of these legislative changes. There is widespread hope that these discussions will not only clarify the legislative intentions but will also lead to a more structured and efficient compensation system that prioritizes both employer and employee needs, ultimately fostering economic growth and stability in Fiji.
The collaborative approach championed by these consultations serves as a positive ray of optimism for shaping laws that resonate with the realities of the workforce while ensuring a conducive business environment for all stakeholders involved.
