Papua New Guinea’s Minister for ICT, Timothy Masiu, emphasized the need for a cooperative and inclusive approach to digital transformation in the Pacific during his speech at the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) gathering in Singapore. He highlighted that connectivity is crucial for remote islands and rural communities, providing access to essential services like education and healthcare.

Masiu introduced seven key pillars essential for this digital transformation: Connectivity, Infrastructure, Policy, Security, Skills, Services, and Local Capacity, linking them directly to the Lagatoi Declaration, which promotes an inclusive digital agenda. He pointed out that mere infrastructure is not enough without supportive policy frameworks that reflect local needs.

He also addressed the increasing urgency of cybersecurity threats as the region’s digital footprint expands, advocating for heightened vigilance and coordinated regional action to mitigate risks. In line with his vision, he stressed the importance of nurturing local digital talent through educational initiatives and practical services like e-Health, e-Education, and e-Government.

Masiu’s call to action is underscored by the challenges faced by the Pacific, where many inhabitants still lack reliable internet access. He urged stakeholders to ensure that digital initiatives lead to tangible improvements in the lives of Pacific islanders, rather than being undertaken for their own sake.

His metaphor of the Lagatoi canoe symbolizes the collective journey towards a digitally empowered Pacific, urging partners to navigate this transformative voyage together, creating a future where every islander is connected and empowered.

This article reflects a broader movement in the Pacific region striving for digital sovereignty, resilience, and economic growth through innovation and inclusivity. With ongoing efforts in logistics, training, and partnerships, there is a hopeful momentum for comprehensive digital advancement across the Pacific islands.
