The Nausori Town Council is reporting positive developments in its efforts to recover outstanding rates and service fees, with significant progress being made. Acting Chief Executive Rajesh Kumar stated that the current rate arrears amount to approximately $2 million, while garbage collection arrears stand at $1.33 million, leading to a total of around $3.33 million in combined arrears. This marks a notable decrease from previous totals exceeding $4 million.

Kumar highlighted that enhanced oversight through the MYOB system, alongside structured payment plans and more diligent follow-ups by the finance team, has been instrumental in achieving these improved recovery rates. He noted that prior to his tenure, the arrears were over $4 million, but in the last financial year, the council set a target of collecting $1.4 million in rates and surpassed it, collecting $1.6 million. This indicates a shift in the mindset of rate payers, reflecting a positive trend towards timely payments.

Despite these encouraging results, Kumar acknowledged that challenges remain. Issues such as property owners living abroad, deceased owners, and family disputes can complicate recovery efforts. Nonetheless, the council is committed to addressing these challenges as it continues to prioritize reducing arrears and strengthening its financial position.

The ongoing improvements in collections not only reflect a responsible management approach but also offer hope for further financial stability within the council, ultimately benefiting the residents and services in the community.
