Nasinu is grappling with a severe waste management crisis as illegal dumping activities have surged, tarnishing the suburban environment and posing health risks to residents. The area has become a hotspot for indiscriminate waste disposal, with trash piling up along the streets, creating a landscape marred by unpleasant sights and noxious odors.

Residents across neighborhoods, from Makoi to Nadawa, are expressing their distress over the escalating problem. Meli Nacagilevu, a long-time resident, shared her frustration, stating that the yearly influx of rubbish has reached an intolerable level. “It’s the same thing every year; people are dumping everything by the road,” she lamented, highlighting the offensive smell that pervades their homes and the visible presence of maggots and flies.

The types of waste found on the streets are alarming, ranging from household garbage and soiled diapers to discarded appliances. In Nadawa, locals Semisi Mills and Taniela Tukutuku noted that the waste trail extends for considerable distances. They pointed out that while the Nasinu Town Council offers monthly waste collection services, a portion of the community chooses to ignore these rules, opting instead to dump their refuse secretly at night.

Witnesses have reported increasingly troubling findings, including dead animals among the heaps of trash, compounding the health concerns for nearby residents. Mr. Mills added that the offenders are not limited to pedestrians; some are using vehicles to covertly unload large quantities of waste under the cover of darkness.

Frustrated by the degradation of their living environment, community members are calling on everyone to contribute positively by maintaining cleanliness and disposing of waste responsibly. There is a growing desire among the residents of Nasinu to restore their area to a more sanitary condition, emphasizing the collective responsibility in safeguarding their community’s health and environment.
