The Nasinu Town Council is facing a significant challenge with illegal dumping, particularly in the Valelevu area, where trash has become an eyesore and a health hazard. Signs in the region prohibit littering, yet residents report that refuse is frequently scattered on the ground, causing foul odors and attracting pests.

Local resident Meredani Diruve expressed her frustration, noting that the lack of a waste bin near the Godfrey Rd and Rosi St intersection, which was removed last year, has led to people dumping their rubbish on the ground instead. She mentioned witnessing offenders dispose of waste during the night, contributing to the ongoing issue.

Felix Magnus, the executive chairman of the Nasinu Town Council, confirmed that these littering incidents involve outsiders who come to the area to dump waste. In response, the council plans to install 40 surveillance cameras in collaboration with the police to monitor illegal dumping and enhance public safety. Magnus highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that it aims to not only discourage littering but also to combat other criminal activities in the area, such as drug peddling.

This situation echoes concerns raised by other communities in Fiji, where residents have similarly called for stronger action against illegal dumping. Recent initiatives by the Nasinu Town Council to improve environmental cleanliness include previous campaigns and measures to elevate public awareness about proper waste disposal practices.

The installation of surveillance cameras, along with plans for enhanced lighting in poorly lit areas, is part of a broader strategy aimed at fostering a cleaner community. These efforts not only target illegal dumping but also aim to instill a sense of responsibility among residents regarding their surroundings.

The situation reflects an opportunity for community engagement and ownership of environmental issues, promoting a healthy, sustainable environment for future generations. Through collective action and enforcement, there is hope for a cleaner and safer Nasinu.
