Nasinu Town Council faced a significant challenge last year, recording 436 cases of illegal dumping. Chief Executive Felix Magnus highlighted the council’s proactive approach to enforcement, revealing that over 100 fines were issued specifically for illegal dumping and other waste-related offences in Nasinu.
In total, the council delivered approximately 16,000 tonnes of waste to the Naboro Landfill in 2024. This figure reflects a considerable increase from the roughly 6,000 tonnes collected between August 2024 and January 2025, following the council’s resumption of waste management responsibilities. The stark rise illustrates the growing amount of waste both generated and improperly discarded within the community.
Magnus pointed out that inspections of council-provided bins, which are emptied twice a week, reveal that a significant portion of the trash does not belong to local residents. He noted, “It’s coming from elsewhere,” indicating that these bins are often misused by individuals from outside the area. The council has observed that many of the discarded items appear to be transported from other locations, either intentionally dumped in public spaces or improperly disposed of in designated bins.
To combat this trend, the Nasinu Town Council is strengthening its enforcement efforts and enhancing monitoring measures. The focus remains not only on penalizing offenders but also on managing the escalating volumes of waste in the community. These initiatives aim to foster a cleaner environment for residents while addressing the ongoing issue of illegal dumping.
