Residents of Caubati in Nasinu are expressing their frustration as heaps of rubbish remain strewn along roadsides and around homes following a scheduled rubbish collection earlier this week. Despite expectations that the situation would improve, household waste, including bags of assorted rubbish and discarded cartons, persists long after the rubbish truck completed its rounds.
Many residents voiced their concerns about the health and sanitation risks created by the accumulated rubbish, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Some noted that while the rubbish truck did arrive on collection day, it was already filled by the time it reached parts of the settlement. Consequently, many bins and bags were left untouched, resulting in excess waste cluttering the area.
“The truck came, but it was already full with household rubbish from other areas,” said resident Netani Yali. “They picked up what they could and then left. The extra rubbish was just left there.” Yali pointed out that the truck did not make a return trip to collect the remaining waste, contrary to what some residents had anticipated.
This issue appears to be a recurring problem, particularly during weeks when local households generate more waste than usual. “We try our best to put rubbish out on the correct day, but when it’s not collected, it stays there for days,” Yali explained. Residents further expressed their worries about stray dogs rummaging through rubbish bags, which not only spreads waste but also creates an unpleasant living environment.
Local residents are urging the relevant authorities to revisit rubbish collection schedules and ensure that trucks can return for a second round of pickups when necessary. Yali emphasized the need for a more dependable waste collection service to prevent rubbish from accumulating and to help maintain cleanliness in the expanding Nasinu community.
This call for improved waste management highlights the growing need for proactive measures to tackle sanitation issues in the region, fostering a healthier and more pleasant environment for all residents.
