Sekove Tawake and Sailosi Lakovi, two middle-aged men charged with attempted robbery, resisting arrest, and failing to provide fingerprints to authorities, faced a hearing at the Magistrate Court in Nasinu today. During proceedings, the prosecution indicated that the defendants had declined to engage in a caution interview, preventing the police from fully advancing their case due to the accused’s rights.

Lakovi expressed concerns regarding alleged legal inaccuracies in their charging process, claiming that while they were detained on December 22, formal charges were filed a day earlier, on December 21. The State suggested that this matter should be directly discussed between Lakovi and his legal counsel.

Both men, choosing to be represented by private attorneys, were reminded of the charges against them and confirmed their understanding of these counts. The defense requested that they be detained at Valelevu Police Station due to significant injuries requiring medical attention. However, the court countered that the remand facilities have qualified medical professionals able to provide the necessary care.

The prosecution’s applications were unchallenged by the defendants, a fact formally recorded by the court. Notably, both Tawake and Lakovi have previous offenses recorded with the Nasinu Magistrate Court, which are set to be addressed in January.

The court has decided to keep the accused in custody while making arrangements for any required medical evaluations or wellness checks. Their next court appearance is scheduled for January 6, 2026. As the legal proceedings continue, the case underscores the complexities surrounding legal rights and the judicial process.
